November and December are, by far, my favorite time of the year to fish. The reservoirs are quiet, the temps are cool, and the bass are feeding up for a cold winter. If you know what to look for this time of year can be amazing....you also have to be willing to brave the cold air :)
Gunlock Reservoir has been producing some absolute giants this year. The last two months I have caught 5 Large Mouth over 7lbs with a ton in the 4 to 6 pound range.
Its been a little tricky to get these fish to bite but locating the forage they are feeding on with good ambush areas has been key. At Gunlock this means locating big schools of Crappie by chunk rock and sharp drop offs. Every single big fish I have caught the last two months I have seen bite using my Forward Facing Sonar.
I can't give away all my secrets but I have caught the majority of the bigger fish using a finesse jig in either a 3/8 or 5/8 oz football head. You would think you would have to drag those jigs slow with the 40 to 43 degree water temps but these fish have been aggressive and prefer that jig being stroked (most of the time).
